Twitter on Wednesday announced that, starting next week, it will begin policies to reduce and, in some cases, remove posts that contain harmful misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines.
Specifically, Twitter has announced that it will take action against false claims that suggest that immunizations and vaccines are used to control populations, false claims that have been widely debunked regarding the adverse impacts of vaccines, and false claims that Covid-19 is not real and therefore vaccinations are unnecessary.
The company also announced that in 2021 it may place labels or warnings on tweets that push unfounded rumors, controversial claims and out-of-context information about vaccines. These labels will direct Twitter users to authoritative public health information, the company said.
A similar policy is being followed by Facebook, which announced earlier this month that it would begin removing misinformation about coronavirus vaccines, at a time when many countries around the world have begun or are planning to distribute them.
