Incorrect news: There was no fire in the Congress building

HIBRID

The information portal "Telegrafi.com" has published an article that falsely claims that "the US Congress building has been set on fire."

This article is based on a news story published on the American media outlet "CNN", which refers to several images appearing on this television station that broadcast images of smoke near the Congress building in the American capital, Washington.

So, the news has nothing to do with what is claimed in the article published on "Telegrafi.com".

Article published on Telegrafi.com:

The US Congress was locked down due to an "external security threat" as smoke billowed from the Capitol Hill building. They have evacuated participants in the rehearsal for the inauguration of Joseph Biden as US president, the Telegraph reports.

The fire chief said the incident, which occurred in the morning, involved a small fire, which was extinguished, CNN reports. As he explained, it was a minimal incident that cannot even be considered an incident.

The warning was given over a megaphone, and attendees at the Democrat's inauguration were told to evacuate immediately.

Currently, thousands of soldiers are surrounding the Capitol, which is preparing for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, which will take place on January 20.

As can be seen, in the Telegrafi.com report there is a contradiction between what is claimed in the paraphrase and what is presented in the CNN news, to which they refer. In fact, the link to CNN that is placed in this article is not at all related to what is claimed.

This American media outlet wrote that yesterday there was a shutdown of the Capitol (Congress) building, following a brief disturbance.

Below the Telegrafi.com article, there are also two links to two Twitter accounts (PM Breaking News and Utkarsh Singh) showing videos of this smoke. But, ironically, the claim of this article, these two videos also show that the smoke was coming from a fire burning under a bridge in Washington, where a homeless community lives.

Analyze:

As can be seen from the fact check, the article published by “Telegrafi.com” presents incorrect news. What is claimed in the title of this article “Fire in the US Congress building, personnel evacuated” turns out to be false since, as evidenced by the videos published by this article itself, the fire that broke out was not inside the Capitol building, but in another environment within the city of Washington. So it is true that the building in question has been temporarily closed, but not the news about a fire inside this building. For this reason, hibrid.info evaluates this article as “fake news”.

Reasoning:

The "Fake News" rating is given to media reports that are entirely the product of a medium that itself contains factually incorrect claims or information.

Content that is considered fake news can be reliably determined to have been created and distributed with the intent to misinform the public, i.e., to present a claim that is completely false as fact.
