Old video republished with false claim that protesters in Tirana are chanting Albin Kurti's name

ETRIT REXHEPI

OUR VERDICT

MANIPULATION OF FACTS

The video footage is old, while the calls heard in the audio are "Your end has come" and not "We want Albin Kurti".

A video material is published showing footage from the protests with a caption claiming that the protesters are chanting the name of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

content was published on Thursday (October 22) on TikTok by an account named "siari801".

What is the truth?

The video footage is old, while the cries heard in the audio are "Your end has come."

As of the time of writing, the content has received over 42,000 views, over 3,700 likes, and over 240 comments. Based on the majority of the comments published, it is estimated that the audience is likely to perceive the claim as credible.

Hibrid.info researched the origin of the content using the “Google Lens” tool (see here). The content was also found published (October 22) on Facebook by an account named “Elez Neziraj” (see here).

While another publication of the same content confirmed that the video material in question is old, as it turned out to have been published on June 6 (see here).

To verify the claim and to examine whether the content had been previously covered, Hibrid.info checked its own publication archive (see here).

From this research, a previous article was found, in which the same claim was addressed (see here).

The article confirmed that the protesters' chant was identified as "The end has come."

This finding was also supported by reports from Albanian media that had covered and reported the protest (see here, here and here).

A little context

In Albania, protests in June opposed a tourism project in the protected area of Pishë Poro–Nartë, near Vlora, which envisages the construction of luxury hotels and villas worth billions of euros and is linked to foreign investors, including previously mentioned plans by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump (see here).

Meanwhile, protests are now underway against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama in October. They are related to issues such as alleged corruption, problems in education, the costs of studies and demands for Rama's resignation (see here).

So, the video presents footage from the June protests, which were held for reasons other than those of the October protests.

Analyze

The video footage shows footage from protests in Albania, accompanied by a caption claiming that protesters are chanting the name of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

However, research through the Google Lens tool and verification of previous publications of the same content confirmed that the video is old.

Also, from Hibrid.info's previous coverage and Albanian media reports on the protest, it was determined that the chant heard in the video is "You have come to the end", and not Albin Kurti's name.

The June protests, from which the footage was taken, were related to opposition to a tourism project in the Pishë Poro–Nartë protected area, while the October protests are related to opposition to Edi Rama's government.

Therefore, based on its work methodology, Hibrid.info assesses this content as "Manipulation of facts".

rationale

“Factual manipulation” is a rating given to informational content that uses facts known to be accurate but interprets them in a distorted manner. These reports typically use accurate information to draw incorrect conclusions or claims, thereby misleading consumers of media content about the actual meaning of the facts presented.
