Twitter has confirmed that it is developing a new tool to combat misinformation. Called “Birdwatch,” the new feature will allow users to report concerns about tweets and fill out a survey that will assess whether the tweets contain harmful content, the company announced. ndtv.comJane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane), who is the creator of this option, has shared more features since August, when the tool was unveiled, that give a glimpse into how this Twitter-integrated tool can use big data to moderate content on the platform.
Through multiple photos on Twitter, Wong on Saturday demonstrated the filter. He said that within this option is the form, which initially had multiple questions that would add context to the complaint. Later, Kayvon Beykpour, Lead Product at Twitter and Co-founder of the live-streaming app Periscope, which was acquired by Twitter in 2015, confirmed that more details about Birdwatch will be revealed very soon.
Based on Beykpour's confirmation, social media advisor Matt Navarra also shared a screenshot last week, which showed a small binoculars icon appearing under a tweet that allowed him to access the "Birdwatch" feature.
In her previous tweet, Wong also showed how the “Birdwatch” tool would allow users to add notes to the tweet they are rating. The history of tweet ratings made by users in terms of their authenticity could then be made available for other users to vote on.
There are still many things that need to be improved about this tool that serves to stop misinformation. It is also not yet clear whether this tool will be open to all users, or only to specific groups of fact-checkers, or to groups of Twitter moderators.
