Old video of Russian paratroopers released purporting to be an invasion of the Ukrainian city of Kharkov

HIBRID

A suspicious video has been published on online platforms, showing images of a military operation, specifically the dropping of paratroopers, claiming to be part of the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces.

Most channels and profiles on these platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter) have titled this video material as the occupation of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov.

However, after research, hibrid.info has confirmed that these images do not depict a military operation by Russian forces during the invasion of Ukraine. In fact, they are a Russian military exercise conducted in 2018.

While tracking digital platforms, hibrid.info has seen that videos with the same and similar images depict a Russian military exercise (Vostok 2018) that has not taken place at the current time.

In the description of a similar video it is written that the images are from an exercise done in December 2018 (here). While the other one shows a different date (September) but of the same year (see video). here from minute 2:23).

Analyze:

The claims made in the video that the images supposedly show a Russian paratrooper attack turn out to be untrue.

Based on this, hibrid.info assesses this as "misinformation".

Reasoning:

A “Disinformation” rating is given to media reporting that contains a “mix” of inaccurate sources or even half-truthful content. This rating will also address reports that have incorrect attributions or headlines that do not reflect the text in terms of information accuracy.
